Council approves SF‑7 rezoning for a 13‑lot subdivision, sets May 2 election and continues two hearings to Feb. 2

At its Jan. 5 meeting the Burleson City Council unanimously approved a zoning change (Case 25‑3305) to rezone roughly three acres at 2245 Southwest Wilshire Boulevard from agricultural to SF‑7, allowing approximately 13 single‑family lots. Tony McElwain, director of development services, said staff had notified property owners within 300 feet, received no formal opposition and that the Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval 8–0. The applicant, Walter Mattyostick, described how the tract would tie into adjacent development. A motion to approve passed unanimously after the public hearing was opened and closed.

The council also heard two related items (voluntary annexation, Case 25‑260, and a zoning request at 1500 County Road 60602, Case 25‑258) and, at the applicants’ request and after opening the statutorily required public hearings, voted to continue those matters to the Feb. 2, 2026 council meeting at 5:30 p.m.

On elections, staff presented the elements needed to order the May 2, 2026 general election for mayor and council places 2, 4 and 6. The council approved a resolution ordering the election, adopted a joint election resolution with the Burleson Independent School District (BISD) and approved an interlocal agreement with Johnson County to use the Johnson County Subcourthouse at 247 Elk Drive (Room 212) as a polling place; the actions passed unanimously. Staff outlined early‑voting dates and procedures and noted the city will act as early‑voting clerk and share costs with BISD.

The meeting recessed into executive session at 8:30 p.m. under Texas Government Code sections 551.071, 551.072 and 551.087.
