Burleson honors community quilt and praises first responders after family recounts care

Jen Basham, Burleson's parks and recreation director, presented the Color Your World community quilt to the council on June 16, saying the project “brought together residents of all ages” and reflected “a personal piece of Burleson’s history.” The city will exhibit the finished quilt at city facilities before placing it in a permanent home.
Fire Chief Casey Davis introduced a unit citation to recognize fire and police personnel for their response and family support in a recent cardiac-arrest call. Davis said the department’s first core value is “people first” and invited family members to share how staff behaved “above and beyond.”
Mike Hoover, whose father died after a cardiac arrest, told the council the responders not only provided emergency care but ‘‘locked up’’ the house, gathered his father’s belongings and “washed the entire area,” details he said he learned later. “They went above and beyond,” Hoover said. Chief Davis noted dispatchers and patrol officers also assisted and that the Burleson Police Foundation recognized the responders for “service above and beyond.”
Councilors thanked staff and donors at the meeting. Jen Basham also introduced a donor-backed resolution to accept a memorial bench donation in Old Town Burleson honoring Brandon Bennett; the council unanimously accepted the donation and plans to place the bench as described by donors.
The council did not take additional policy action on the quilt or the memorial beyond accepting the donation and scheduling photo opportunities; staff said photos of the quilt and the citation recipients will be taken after the meeting.
