Struthers council to explore possible urgent-care clinic; members press for cost details

The Struthers City Council voted during a caucus meeting to pursue further information and a roundtable discussion about a possible urgent‑care or “quick‑med” facility after outreach from local providers, Mayor Miller said.

Mayor Miller said Mercy, Mahoning County Public Health and Cycare had contacted the city about the idea and emphasized that council had not approved any action and was only looking to explore options. “This is just the possibility of exploring,” Mayor Miller said, adding the city would relay any information from the presenter back to council.

Several council members said they were wary of unknown costs and potential long‑term financial commitments. One council member who said they had not attended the original presentation said, “I’m gonna abstain from it just from this vote because I was not here … I would like to know a cost before I — there’s 1,000,000 questions to be asked.” Another member pressed for details on funding sources, noting the proposal’s staffing list included relatively high‑paying positions and expressing concern about whether grant or donation revenue would cover operating costs.

Council members discussed options including a locally focused clinic serving Struthers residents only and the possibility of putting a funding measure on a future ballot if a formal plan required local tax support. Several members said the program appeared to rely on donations and grants; one committee member said those revenue sources could be uncertain and recommended further study.

The council asked staff to arrange a roundtable meeting so members could question the presenter and review financial estimates before taking any formal vote or committing city resources. There was no formal motion recorded to approve funding, and no vote on a final proposal was taken at the caucus.
