Council tables purchase of tanker truck pending further review

The Jefferson City Council on Thursday voted to postpone consideration of a proposed Firemaster tanker purchase, asking staff and council members to gather more information about specifications, procurement options and available alternatives before taking final action.

The purchase proposal would rely on a Texas Forest Service grant for up to $300,000 and roughly $184,000 in financing, according to council discussion. Council members and staff questioned whether comparable trucks purchased by nearby departments offered better capacity or value: one councilor noted that a truck obtained by the Jackson volunteer department cost substantially less and holds "twice the water." The city sought clarification on pump-and-roll capability and whether additional equipment such as hoses would be required.

Attorney High — who spoke during the discussion — urged caution about assuming all costs are covered by reimbursement programs and explained that the grant reimbursement process requires the city to front funds in many cases. Council members said they wanted either a site visit to compare trucks or additional bids to verify the best value for the city.

Mayor Pro Tem Kimberly made the motion to table the item to the April regular meeting, seconded by Councilor April; the motion carried with members voting in favor. Council members directed staff to coordinate inspections and further review, including consulting the volunteer fire chief and county contacts who previously purchased similar equipment.

The postponement leaves the city time to evaluate alternative models and confirm grant match requirements before committing municipal funds or financing.
