Community asks McFarland School Board to rename Performing Arts Center for Bill Garvey

She said the family and supporters have established an endowed $1,000 scholarship in his name, run a memorial golf outing that splits proceeds between the McFarland Education Foundation and McFarland Athletics, and collected nearly 100 testimonials supporting the proposed renaming.
The presentations included endorsements from longtime band director Mike Leckrone and others who said Garvey built one of the district’s most vibrant music programs and encouraged students to participate in both athletics and the arts. “He cares,” Leckrone said, summarizing repeated testimonials about Garvey’s influence. Paul Ackley, the district’s director of athletics, described Garvey as a teacher and coach who “poured all of his energy into McFarland.” A former superintendent (referred to in the meeting as Scott) said renaming the facility would place Garvey alongside other local honorees and preserve his legacy for future students.
Board members thanked presenters for bringing the proposal and for the documents included in the board packet. The board did not take action; the chair treated the item as informational and said the board would accept public feedback before any future decision.
