Historic Preservation Commission praises Preservation Day, plans earlier promotion and district outreach

The Boulder City Historic Preservation Commission on May 28 reviewed its May 10 Historic Preservation Day and agreed to refine outreach for 2026, including earlier promotion, stronger school coordination and a larger historic‑district map for realtors and the public.
Members said the event "went great" but differed on timing of promotion. "There wasn't enough information on social media for a longer period of time," one commissioner said, urging earlier posts and event teasers to reach more residents. Another commissioner and staff noted the event had been posted nearly a month in advance and reshared by groups such as Boulder City Social and the museum.
Commissioners highlighted the success of children’s activities including a banner project and tile demonstrations tied to school curricula. "The banners are absolutely gorgeous," a commissioner said, and members agreed unveiling the top three winners on the day of the event could encourage more in-person participation. Staff said the city and Main Street organization coordinated with schools and the Chamber to incorporate student projects into the day.
The commission asked staff to explore posting student flags and a "citizen favorite" selection online to expand engagement. Brandon Smith, Boulder City staff, suggested tying the event to other attractions — such as an art auction in the DWP Building — to broaden attendance and recommended adding consideration of the Motel Sign District to a future agenda.
Members also discussed logistics for next year, including possible branded shirts or name tags for volunteers to increase visibility, and adding an action item in a future meeting to create a larger printed district map for outreach.
The commission closed the discussion by asking staff to incorporate these outreach items into planning for Historic Preservation Day 2026 and to place the district map and Motel Sign District recognition on a future agenda.
