Dan Gibson, a Natchez resident, asked the Board of Supervisors to support the city’s resolution to rename the Liberty Road Bridge in honor of former mayor Larry 'Butch' Brown. Gibson described Brown’s contributions to bluff stabilization, the convention center and coastal recovery work.
Gibson said the city had already prepared a resolution and that the legislature would need a copy from the board to proceed. He asked the supervisors to spread the resolution on the minutes and to support seeking state legislative approval.
A supervisor moved that the board record the resolution and the motion was seconded; the chair called a voice vote and the board recorded an affirmative vote. Staff said the city has already moved forward and the board’s recorded resolution will assist the city’s effort in Jackson.
“We are trying to get the legislature to approve this in the last few days of this spring session,” Gibson said, asking the board to add its formal support on the record. The board agreed to do so and instructed staff to include the resolution in the minutes and to transmit it as needed.
The board did not vote on the wording of a plaque or signage and did not set a formal installation date; the city will coordinate next steps with the county.
