Butler County splits Senior Center and Rural Transit into separate departments

Butler County supervisors voted April 20 to reorganize the Senior Center and Rural Transit into two distinct departments, each led by its own director, to address service gaps for residents outside David City.
HR Director Aida Hickman described how the previous director split time between the two programs and said that separate directors would allow better focus on both services. County Clerk Lori Aschoff and County Treasurer Karey Adamy reviewed budgets and year-to-date expenditures. Hickman said Rural Transit is self-sustaining and the Senior Center’s restructuring would increase county support by about $13,000 annually, which she expects could be offset by fundraising and grants. Chairman Steager said, "If the County can better provide for and serve our seniors, who represent 25% of the county’s population for an additional $13,000, how can we not do that?"
Supervisor Scott Griess opposed the change on the grounds that the program may be better handled privately; the motion to approve the restructuring passed with one nay (Griess) and the remainder in favor (Sypal absent).
The board directed staff to implement the structural change and to monitor program budgets and service delivery to residents outside David City.
