Matt Sherman, executive director over student services for Richland 02, told the Academics Committee on March 26 that the district has recently celebrated a string of recognitions. "First off, we celebrated Betsy Salcedo yesterday. She's a school nurse at Westwood High School... She was named the South Carolina Nurse of the Year," Sherman said.
Sherman and trustees noted athletic honors as well: a senior (identified as Chase Thomas) was named Richland County female basketball player of the year; multiple coaches were recognized at the state level, including coaches named to a top-25 coaching fellowship and regional coach-of-the-year awards. Sherman listed other honorees such as Dr. Garrett Knight (Athletic Director) and coach Katie Litton (swim coach).
Sherman emphasized many staff pay professional association dues and attend meetings out of pocket, representing the district at state and national levels. Trustees asked Sherman to add a concise one- or two-sentence description for each recognition to the chat so staff could compile a board brief for distribution to the full board.
