Cranston council adopts memorial, cultural resolutions and ordinances; several routine votes unanimous

The Cranston City Council on March 16 adopted a series of ceremonial resolutions and routine municipal measures, approving a memorial for former Council President Carlos Spirito Jr., proclamations marking Saint Joseph’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day and Women’s History Month, and advancing local licensing and traffic ordinances.
Council President Wall opened the meeting and ushered the memorial resolution honoring Carlos Spirito Jr., which Councilwoman Graziano read to the chamber, saying it was "with profound sadness that the members of the city council, Cranston City Council, have learned of the passing of the former council president Carlos Spirito junior." Family members Steven and Nancy Spirito were invited forward to receive the council’s citation. A motion to approve the memorial was moved and seconded and the clerk recorded affirmative votes.
The council also presented and approved a resolution commemorating the Feast of Saint Joseph and a resolution recognizing Saint Patrick’s Day as a day to celebrate Irish heritage in Cranston. Each resolution was moved, seconded and recorded by roll call with councilmembers voting in favor.
Recognizing March as Women’s History Month, council sponsors and Director Renzulli emphasized local achievements by women and announced citations for student athletes, including Cranston West’s Gianna Espinal Albizu. The council moved and approved the resolution after brief remarks in support.
On consent and committee recommendations, the council advanced a Class BV liquor license for a proposed establishment at 146 Gantt Avenue (reported by the licenses and safety committee) and approved two ordinances reported from the ordinance committee, including Ordinance 2-26-02, described by the committee chair as prohibiting certain right turns. The finance committee’s recommendations — an abatements resolution and tax interest waiver approvals — were also placed on the consent calendar and approved.
All votes taken at the meeting were conducted by roll call; the clerk recorded affirmative votes for the listed items. The council adjourned after referring new business to committees.
