Craven County health department secures $250,000 amendment for Havelock pharmacy, approves new clinic fees

The Craven County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment to allocate $250,000 to help open a second county-operated pharmacy in Havelock and adopted fee updates for public-health services.
Scott Harrelson of the county health department told the board that funds previously set aside will support renovations and the pharmacy’s startup; the department said the second site will increase convenience and offer lower drug prices. A commissioner moved to amend the allocation to $250,000 to “keep the drugs flowing,” and the amendment passed on a roll call vote.
Harrelson also presented proposed fee changes that include a narrow ultrasound service for the maternity clinic (dating ultrasounds) and billing for long-acting contraceptives at acquisition cost to remain compliant with Title X family-planning program standards. The board approved the fee updates on roll call; the health department said the aim is to break even on these services and to mirror Medicaid or federal fee standards when possible.
The health department said it expects the new pharmacy site to be profitable with two pharmacists already engaged in licensure and that the ultrasound capability will improve access for pregnant patients receiving clinic care.
