Bay County veterans committee to expand to seven members; appointment schedule set for April

The Bay County Veterans Affairs Committee on March 17 announced plans to expand the advisory body to seven members and circulated an appointment schedule for selections in April. "We're going to vote today to expand the Veterans Affairs Committee to 7 members," the chair said during the meeting.
The committee reviewed the terms that will accompany the expansion: several positions will be partial-year appointments that expire on Dec. 31, 2026, and Dec. 31, 2027, to fit the committee’s existing staggered rotation; subsequent appointments will be for full four-year terms. Staff explained the staggered partial terms are necessary so the committee retains an odd-numbered membership and fits within rotation rules advised by corporation counsel.
Staff also told the committee that corporation counsel limits how many vacancies or renewals may be open simultaneously; to comply, the county has set mixed partial and full terms so appointments can be staggered over multiple years. The committee was told that the county commission — not the committee itself — makes the final appointments and that the commission is expected to act after the county publishes notices for interested applicants.
Committee members discussed logistics and timing. Staff said appointment notices will be published per county rules and suggested the next committee meeting after appointments will likely be in May. A committee member asked for and staff agreed to distribute a printed list of current members and the dates when each term expires.
The committee did not take a binding vote to change county code at the meeting; members framed the discussion as preparation of the appointment schedule and compliance with legal constraints rather than a finalizing action by the advisory body. The committee moved and approved routine items on the agenda, including acceptance of Jan. 20 minutes and receiving the 2025 statistical report.
The committee is expected to reconvene after the commission’s appointments; staff said they would circulate the roster and term-expiration list to committee members.
