Region 4 reports $100 million in county infrastructure projects; commission backs pedestrian‑bridge CDS application

A Region 4 representative (S6) presented a rundown of infrastructure projects across Fayette County, saying the portfolio of current and developing projects amounts to just over $100,000,000 across 22 projects. Key items included a Town of Anstead Chestnutburg sewer extension (a US Army Corps award of $19,950,000 and a projected total cost of $27,100,000), wastewater‑treatment upgrades, multiple waterline extensions (with project costs and percent‑complete details provided), demolition and park improvement projects funded through HUD, and other community building work.

Following the overview, Cassandra Lawson (S13) spoke about the Fayette County Park trail improvements and proposed a pedestrian bridge near Laurel Creek to improve safety. Lawson said construction and soft costs are estimated at $600,000 and suggested applying for congressionally directed spending (CDS) or HUD funding, which the presentation noted requires no local match. "It's estimated that the total construction of the project with soft costs included, will be $600,000," Lawson said.

Commissioners asked about inspection and maintenance responsibilities; Region 4 staff said park staff could likely maintain the pedestrian structure and that the department of highways permit and engineering inspections would be part of the process. The commission voted to authorize Region 4 to prepare and submit the CDS application; the motion passed by voice vote.
