District to study math pathways and acceleration timing

Dr. Henahan told the committee the district will launch a math‑pathway study as part of its comprehensive plan, convening teacher leaders, counselors and administrators to analyze current structures, study alternative models (including integrated algebra/geometry/algebra II options) and evaluate whether existing acceleration points and curriculum adequately prepare students.

“The goal would be to bring a team together to really just analyze our structures at our system to see how our students are doing and if we are actually preparing them adequately for their future,” Henahan said. The study will examine on‑ramps and off‑ramps so accelerated pathways have appropriate access for all students and will review the district’s current identification points at the end of fourth and seventh grades.

Board members asked why fourth and seventh grades are considered key inflection points; Henahan said those are the district’s current practice and the study will re‑examine the historical rationale alongside curriculum implications.

Next steps: administrators plan to convene the team this summer, begin research on alternative pathway models and report findings and recommendations to the board next school year.
