Custer County approves purchase and financing of used vehicles from Chaffey County

The Custer County Board of Commissioners on March 25 approved a two-part plan to acquire multiple used vehicles from Chaffey County and to finance the acquisitions.
Chair Bill Candac presented Resolution 26-19, which authorizes purchase of a package of vehicles (several model years 2017'2019) at approximately $8,000 per unit and upfitting costs estimated at $14,371.91. Commissioners said three of the vehicles will be used by county departments to replace older units and four will be assigned to the sheriff's office.
Vernon Hall, the county's director of finance, explained Resolution 26-20 would provide financing for the vehicle purchases and appropriate a $5,000 down payment from the capital improvement fund into the sheriff's office capital outlay line, increasing the 2026 appropriation to $40,000. "We are basically financing these vehicles," Hall said while summarizing the budget adjustment and the plan to include ongoing payments in next year's budget.
Commissioners discussed vehicle values and mileage (several units estimated in the 100,000'115,000-mile range) and said selling a list of surplus county vehicles would offset purchase costs. The board moved and adopted both resolutions without recorded opposition.
What happens next: the county will proceed with vehicle transfers and upfitting; the finance department will record the $5,000 supplemental appropriation into the sheriff's capital outlay line for the 2026 fiscal year.
