CDEC tables All Nations Day; committee cites timing and readiness

KEIZER, Ore. — The Community Diversity & Engagement Committee voted to table planning for All Nations Day during a March 30 joint work session with the Keizer City Council after members said the event was not far enough along to proceed.

Committee members raised multiple scheduling concerns, including competing facility reservations at the civic center and uncertainty about whether school calendars would allow student participation if the event were scheduled for Indigenous Peoples' Day (Oct. 12). Committee members agreed those logistics and the availability of performers, volunteers and facilities needed clearer confirmation before moving forward.

According to committee discussion, Elaine Wilson moved to table the event and Tammy Kunz seconded the motion; the committee approved the motion with at least two members recorded as voting no. "We voted on it and tabled it," a committee participant said during the discussion; some members said they had completed work on the event and had preferred to proceed.

Tammy Kunz said she would bring the issue back to the committee in April for a readiness check and to propose a workable date if the committee decides to move forward. "Since we didn't have forum for this meeting, I can bring it up at the next meeting in April," Kunz said.

Next steps: the committee will confirm facility availability and school schedules, gather outstanding planning details from members who had been working on the event and return a recommendation on whether to reschedule or proceed. Staff will record committee recommendations for council review when appropriate.
