James reported to the committee that staff plan to provide a comprehensive year‑over‑year transit ridership analysis covering 2017 through 2025 at the next meeting after resolving recent technical issues.
"Last month, we had a brief conversation about transit figures … I don't have that update for you tonight because of the technical problems that we experienced over the past week or so. However, I will have that for you next month," James said, noting the agency has the underlying data and intends to build a comparative spreadsheet for the committee.
He said the transportation advisory board has settled on a two‑part public survey focused first on current riders and then on the general population to collect broader input. The board estimated it needs approximately 93 responses for the sample to be representative for ridership numbers and said printed copies will be available in addition to an electronic distribution for constituents.
Committee members urged broader outreach and suggested using social media and town bulletin boards to increase awareness. James and other staff discussed differences in program administration and noted two federal program numbers commonly referenced in local transit administration: 5310 (local program the county manages) and 5311 (general public transit operated by the main regional operator). They emphasized coordination with human-services referrals and local operators to maximize access to training and employment destinations.
Next steps: staff will deliver the requested three‑year ridership analysis at the next committee meeting and circulate the public-survey materials for local distribution.
