Board adopts salary study commission recommendation for 8.14% increase to several elected offices

The Washington County Board of County Commissioners voted March 17 to adopt the salary study commission’s recommendations, which include an 8.14% increase for the salaries of several elected positions.
Zachary Kiefer, the county attorney, introduced the commission’s report and noted statutory limits on how the board may implement salary changes. Richard Wilson, chair of the salary study commission, presented the rationale, comparability work and calculations and clarified a numeric typo regarding judges of the Orphans’ Court: the commission used a $7,800 base (not $8,000) and recommended applying the 8.14% adjustment to that figure.
Wilson said the commission’s recommendation is intended to maintain competitiveness and to encourage qualified candidates to seek office. The commission also recommended that one self‑funding body should adhere to the same 8.14% guideline rather than a higher figure the body had previously documented.
Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the recommendation by voice vote (4–0). The board noted the increases would take effect with the commencement of the next term of office and that the board is not required to adopt a higher salary than the commission’s recommendation.
