Representative Dr. Carl Newton presented the resolution and summarized national and state statistics on asthma before asking for names for adoption. “We have asthma affects 28,000,000 people in the United States. 4,750,000 of those are children. We have about 437,000 people that suffer from asthma here in Oklahoma. Oklahoma, we in Oklahoma, we lost 50 people because of asthma just in the last year,” Newton said on the floor.
Newton also noted the rise in food allergies over recent decades and linked allergy prevalence to increased asthma risk in children. He moved that the House designate May as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month; the resolution was adopted without objection.
The House then moved to announcements and adjournment.
