Members also discussed pivoting the Cesar Chavez Day event toward a broader recognition of immigrants while preserving attention to local farmworkers. Options included using the farmer's market, holding events in an auditorium to increase attendance, and timing events in September or October; no date was set.
Commissioners noted the recent opening of a local migrant center this season and said that will inform outreach and scheduling for forums that seek direct input from those affected. Public commenters urged the commission to choose an active, upstream role that moves beyond staff sounding-board functions and to build plans that include resource mapping and an action plan.
The commission agreed to continue planning and to return with more details on format, budget and outreach.
