King Week parade committee reports nearly 200 entries, documentary plans and remaining funds

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade committee updated the Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial on 2026 King Week activities and finances and showed how the Centennial grant funds were used to support programming.
Shondell Newsome, co‑chair of the parade committee, said the event included partnerships with schools, local HBCUs, faith organizations, public agencies and downtown businesses and that the committee recorded roughly 100–200 parade entries. The committee said it did not commingle Centennial funds with other sponsorships and noted media coverage and community turnout were strong.
Committee members described some line items that exceeded original estimates — portable restrooms and additional barricades for safety and lineup adjustments — and said some vendor invoices and in‑kind donations remain pending. The committee reported roughly $131,000 in remaining Centennial funds going into next year, some of which is slated for documentary work with a local production partner.
Commissioners asked about use of Dr. King’s speeches in programming; committee members said excerpts and some full speeches were used in pre‑parade programs and on partner radio (KCP Power 88) and social media. The commission received the report and no formal vote was required.
