The Kasson City Planning Commission recommended that the Kasson City Council approve a conditional use permit for an electronic sign at Quimby Collision Center. Staff displayed mock-ups and said the electronic portion of the sign would measure about 6 by 12 feet on a 10-foot pole, for a total structure height of roughly 16 feet, and recommended no conditions at this location.
Commissioners discussed precedent and typical sign conditions used elsewhere in town — for example, past permits where signs were required to be turned off by 11 p.m. in adjacent residential areas — but staff said that because Quimby’s location is not adjacent to residences, staff did not recommend conditions. A commissioner asked whether MnDOT (the Minnesota Department of Transportation) would have jurisdiction since the site is adjacent to Highway 14; staff replied the sign is not in MnDOT right-of-way so they do not control it.
The chair opened the public hearing for Quimby’s sign; no members of the public spoke. A motion to recommend approval without additional conditions was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The commission will forward the recommendation to the city council for final action.
Staff indicated they would confirm sign comparisons and, if needed, follow up with measurements or further details prior to council review.
