Summary
A City & Safety Services committee agreed to forward a proposal to increase the Athens Municipal Arts Commission from seven to nine members and permit up to four commissioners to live in Athens County outside city limits; the committee moved the measure to full council for first reading next week.
A City & Safety Services committee voted to send a proposed amendment to the Athens Municipal Arts Commission bylaws to the full Athens City Council for consideration of first reading next week.
The proposal would raise the commission’s membership from seven to nine and allow up to four commissioners to reside outside the city but within Athens County; the measure would also remove limits on who can vote on commission proposals, the committee chair said.
The mayor and administration representatives told the committee they supported the change, citing a steady increase in public art projects, including murals and sculptures, and the workload now facing AMAC. “We have had a number of undergraduate and graduate students serve on various boards and commissions,” the mayor said, arguing that expanded membership would help the city manage growing public-art activity.
Committee members discussed the benefits of broader participation, including inviting students from the college of fine arts and residents from across the county. With no objections raised during committee discussion, the chair proposed moving the item to full council for first reading.
If approved at first reading, the measure would appear on a future council agenda for further consideration. The committee did not take a final vote to adopt the bylaw changes at this meeting.
