Generations Park at Boys Ranch named Lone Star Legacy Park

Aaron Dobson, president of the Texas Recreation and Park Society and director of parks and recreation for Cleburne, presented Bedford with a Lone Star Legacy Park designation for Generations Park at Boys Ranch at the April 14 city council meeting.
Dobson told the council the award recognizes parks at least 50 years old that have left an enduring impact on their communities. He traced the site’s history to the Variety Club’s founding of Bedford Boys Ranch in 1949, noted the ranch’s closure in 1957, and said the city acquired part of the property in 1972 and opened it as a park in 1974. “Generations Park at Boys Ranch is more than a park. It is a defining landmark of the city of Bedford,” Dobson said.
City officials noted the park’s mix of preserved features and newer amenities — Bedford Lake, open green space, trails, athletic fields, a disc-golf course, playgrounds, fishing areas and a recreation center operated in partnership with the local YMCA. Council members thanked the volunteers and community leaders whose letters of support, including submissions from Dane Martin and George Campbell, helped secure the statewide recognition.
The council invited Martin and Campbell forward for brief recognition and a small token of appreciation. The presentation closed with staff and council taking a group photo; the meeting then moved on to the consent agenda.
The designation does not create a regulatory change; it is an honorary recognition of historical and community significance.
