Council approves amendment to Oakwood Cemetery mowing contract

HUNTSVILLE — The City Council approved an amendment to the Oakwood Cemetery mowing and trimming contract intended to align start and end dates for city landscape contracts.
Councilmember McKenzie asked whether the six-month $55,000 figure on the amendment was included in this year’s budget; city staff (Penny) replied, "It is included in this year's budget," and explained that the cemetery had been budgeted at $38,000 but that bids and prior purchase orders show higher figures (a cited purchase-order total of about $49,500 for May 2024–2025). Penny also said cemetery mowing last year was about $35,000.
Council discussed equipment and the city’s use of parks tractors and mowers; Parks staff described use of offender/crew contracts for supplemental mowing when available from county programs. Councilmember Lyle raised whether the city could use offender crews more often to save costs; staff said those crews are scheduled through the county and availability varies.
Councilmember McKenzie moved to approve the contract amendment; the motion was seconded and approved with the mayor calling the vote.
