The Colony Parks & Recreation previews spring events, announces registration and partnerships

Lindsey Stancil, recreation manager for The Colony Parks and Recreation Department, briefed the City Council on recent programs and a slate of upcoming spring and summer activities.

Stancil said the city’s partnership with Galaxy Theatres allowed the department to move outdoor cinema nights indoors when weather or wind threatened the inflatable screen; 52 attendees attended the first partnered showing. The department reported a sold-out Spring Eggstravaganza with 648 tickets sold and $3,400 collected in sponsorship revenue; staff estimated roughly 4,500 attendees at the associated athletic-club events and said more than 13,000 Easter eggs and about 150 prizes were distributed.

Stancil reviewed upcoming events: Coach Cox’s kids’ race by the lake (Saturday, April 11) with registration still open for ages 5–12; Arbor Day activities on Saturday, April 25, at the Hawaiian Waters parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (free event with a butterfly release, sapling give-away and family activities); and the department’s first Saturday in May Mother–Son Adventure Day (a paid $40 activity in partnership with Fritz Adventure Park). She also confirmed that learn-to-swim registration opens April 15 and that the public pool is scheduled to open for the Memorial Day weekend on May 23.

Stancil said the learn-to-swim program uses American Red Cross–certified instructors and that classes were lengthened to add water-safety content. She encouraged early registration because the program traditionally fills each year.

City council members thanked Stancil and asked brief clarifying questions; no action was required.
