Historical society asks for larger annual county contribution; commissioners cautious

Members of the Douglas County Historical Society and board representatives told commissioners on March 31 they operate significant long-term preservation and programming work from the Genoa Museum and related facilities, but are stretched financially and requested an additional $10,000 in annual county support.
Matt Bernard (Historical Society board member), Alicia Main (trustee) and Clint Celio (board president) described restoration and exhibit work, volunteer staffing and educational programs that they said preserved the county’s heritage and contributed to tourism and community identity. Bernard and Celio asked the board to consider increasing the direct annual contribution from $25,000 to $35,000 to cover rising operating expenses.
County Manager Jennifer Davidson and commissioners discussed options for where such funding should appear in the budget. Davidson said the $25,000 contribution has historically been placed in the commissioners’ budget but could be moved into the community grants or economic-vitality budgets if the board preferred, and suggested the board consider directing the society to apply for community grants in years where that program opens with available one-time funds.
After discussion, commissioners expressed support for the society’s mission and, given the county’s tight tentative fiscal position, indicated they would keep the longstanding $25,000 contribution in the tentative budget and asked staff to return with options for funding sources and timing prior to final adoption.
The Historical Society representatives said the additional funds would help cover operating expenses, volunteer coordination and building maintenance for both the Genoa Museum and the museum on Highway 395 in Gardnerville. Commissioners thanked the society for its work and invited further communication about program outcomes and alignment with the county strategic plan.
