Council approves new security gate for wastewater plant and will pursue OSHA grant

City staff told council the wastewater treatment plant’s existing gate is failing to close and is a safety and security concern. Council discussed relative costs and warranties; several members favored buying the new gate to reduce lifecycle maintenance and to meet grant eligibility requirements. The council moved and seconded approval of Alternative 1: purchase of a new gate and opening system and pursue the OSHA grant. Staff said the water and sewer funds will primarily finance the work and that procurement will return to council as required for final commitments.
The council’s approval included a direction that staff return with any needed grant paperwork for the mayor’s signature and proceed with procurement if grant funding is not awarded, with city funds allocated per the water/sewer budget.
Next steps include submitting the OSHA grant application and finalizing procurement documents so work can begin this fall if funding and schedules align.
