Regional foundation seeks 5% increase from Kasson to expand grants, early‑childhood support

Aaron Johnson, philanthropy director for the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), presented the foundation’s regional programs and local investment in Dodge County and Kasson.
Johnson said SMIF has invested roughly $4.7 million in Dodge County through loans, grants and programming and highlighted $154,500 in early‑childhood grant awards to Kasson over the last three years and $87,500 in loan activity. He described three focus areas — entrepreneurship, early childhood, and community vitality — and summarized local examples such as childcare training, book distributions and small‑town grants.
SMIF requested Kasson consider a modest 5% increase to its local contribution (from $250 to $262) for fiscal year 2026; Johnson said that change would support continued grant and loan activity in the community. He provided a packet with regional impact numbers and examples and offered to connect staff with program officers for specific projects.
Councilmembers thanked Johnson and indicated they would discuss the request during budget deliberations.
