The Cleburne County Board of Education unanimously approved the 2026–27 school calendar, a contract for policy review and several personnel and Child Nutrition Program items at a meeting held March 2, 2026, at 141 Davenport Drive in Heflin.
Jerimy Bryant, board vice president, called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. and declared a quorum. Voting members listed in the minutes were Owen McWhorter, Jay Grubbs and Tracy McMahan; Chad Smith was recorded as absent. David Howle, superintendent, was listed among non-voting members.
The board approved the consent agenda, which included the March meeting agenda, minutes from the February board meeting and monthly financial reports covering January and February transactions. The consent motion, moved by Tracy McMahan and seconded by Owen McWhorter, was recorded as unanimously approved.
On the superintendent’s recommendations, the board approved the 2026–27 school calendar after a motion from Jay Grubbs and a second from Tracy McMahan. The board also approved a contract for a policy review and analysis update with the Alabama Association of School Boards; that motion was made by Owen McWhorter and seconded by Jay Grubbs.
The board approved contract coaching appointments for the RHS softball program, naming Ashley Skinner and Paula Manley as contract coaches for the 2026 season. Members also accepted the resignation of Connie Bailey, listed as RHS CNP, effective Feb. 27, 2026, and approved a maternity leave for Allison Fetner (listed as RES), effective March 6, 2026.
The Child Nutrition Program was authorized to participate in the Summer Feeding Program, and the board set the Summer CNP site manager pay rate at $25 per hour. Jay Grubbs moved the participation item; Owen McWhorter moved the pay-rate item; both passed unanimously.
In his superintendent report, David Howle recognized Avalena Williamson, an 8th grader at CCHS, for winning a second consecutive Alabama State Wrestling title. The board also noted that the April 6 meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the central office with whole-board training to follow, and that the Alabama Association of School Boards summer conference is scheduled for June 19–21, 2026, with registration opening March 10.
With no further business, Jay Grubbs moved to adjourn; Owen McWhorter seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
