Racine council accepts $150,000 DNR grant for lead service outreach

The Common Council voted unanimously on Feb. 3 to allow the Racine Water Utility to accept a $150,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for lead service lateral replacement outreach.
Alder Land presented the mayor's communication (item 0060‑26) requesting permission to accept the grant, which covers the period from Nov. 1, 2025, through Oct. 31, 2027. Alder Jorgensen, speaking as president of the Water Commission, called the award "a huge win" and said the funds will support public information as the city prepares for substantial construction to remove lead service lines.
Alder Weidner asked whether the grant funds would pay for a new outreach position. Director Fisher replied the utility plans to use internal engineering staff for outreach and that the grant would fund outreach materials rather than a staffed position.
When the clerk called the roll, the vote was 14–0 in favor. Councilmembers said the grant will help inform residents about upcoming work and the long‑term goal of removing lead service lines in the city.
