Mayor Luke Merrill read a proclamation recognizing October as pregnancy and infant loss awareness and NICU babies recognition month and invited community members to speak.
Nicholas Lee and his wife, Shakria Lee, accepted the proclamation and described their family’s experience. Nicholas said their son Brave was born at 22 weeks and spent 341 days in the NICU; their daughter Faith was born at 23 weeks and spent 176 days in intensive care. "With our experience of 517 days in the NICU," Nicholas Lee said, the couple formed a nonprofit to support other NICU families and to help keep those families connected to resources after discharge.
Shakria Lee thanked the city for the community’s support after their first child’s birth, describing neighbors, the fire and police departments, and local volunteers who rallied around the family. The council invited the family to pose for a photo with the proclamation.
The council held the proclamation on the record and did not attach any immediate policy action; the item served as a community recognition and a moment for the family to describe their nonprofit work.
