Isanti staff recommends adding three corridor lights with roundabout project

City staff presented an update on the planned roundabout and urged the committee to include three “lighting infill” locations in the construction contract so the corridor from Highway 65 to the railroad matches the city's long-standing lighting master plan.
Jason, a city public-works staff member, said bids have been received and staff will bring a recommendation to the full council. He described three smaller infill locations that the city has been trying to complete for roughly 10 years and recommended bundling them with the roundabout bid to avoid staging the work over multiple years.
A council member raised safety concerns about an existing utility pedestal at the Kwik Trip corner that has frequently been struck by semitrailers. Jason said the pedestal — a major fiber and utility collection point — currently sits too close to the curb and turning path; staff have spent months coordinating with private utilities and expect relocation work to start before roundabout construction so the pedestal will no longer sit in the truck turning movement.
Staff explained the roundabout design will place new lighting to meet required setbacks and clear zones, and that the large entrance-leg lights will be standalone cobra-arm fixtures while the three infill locations could be mounted on existing poles in order to control cost. Council members noted the city's earlier schedule for infill work (planned across 2026, 2028 and 2030) and several expressed support for completing the infill now under the roundabout grant rather than funding the sites one at a time.
Next steps: staff will include the lighting infill in the roundabout recommendation to the council and coordinate utility relocations with the private providers prior to construction.
