Mountain Brook Board of Education adopts arts materials, approves 2028–29 calendar and routine business

The Mountain Brook Board of Education on March 9, 2026, unanimously approved a set of routine actions: adoption of Arts Education instructional materials, adoption of the 2028–2029 academic calendar, approval of financial statements for February 2026, acceptance of personnel recommendations and declaration of surplus items. The board also voted to table adoption of Social Studies materials until its meeting on April 13, 2026.
Board President Jenifer Kimbrough presided over the meeting at the Mountain Brook Board of Education building, with Dr. Richard Barlow, superintendent, serving as secretary. The meeting followed a work session held at 2:00 p.m. at which no action was taken; the regular session convened at 3:38 p.m. and adjourned at 3:58 p.m.
Dr. Richard Barlow recommended approval of the February minutes and the financial statements and called forward Kari Austin, chief school finance officer, to present the financial statements and cash balances for the month ending February 2026. Each of those recommendations passed on unanimous motions. Motion-makers and seconders were recorded in the meeting minutes and votes were recorded as unanimously approved.
On curriculum matters the board approved the recommended Arts Education materials. The board separately voted to table the Social Studies materials adoption until the next meeting on April 13, 2026; minutes record the intent to revisit Social Studies at that future meeting. The board also approved the proposed 2028–2029 academic calendar after Dr. Barlow said there were no comments on the proposal.
Under New Business the board approved personnel recommendations as submitted and approved the list of surplus items. All motions recorded in the minutes passed unanimously.
The board recognized several student and program accomplishments, including the Legislative School Performance Recognition Program (Top City School), the State Superintendent's Visual Art Exhibit, the Alabama DECA State Competition and United States Presidential Scholars Program candidates; the minutes also list Alabama State Representative David Faulkner among recognitions.
Spring Break for Mountain Brook City Schools is scheduled for March 23–27, 2026, and the board set its next meeting for Monday, April 13, 2026, with a work session at 2:00 p.m. and the regular meeting at 3:30 p.m.
