Council unanimously adopts Ordinance 2026A to make veterans office position full time

The Jackson County Council unanimously adopted Ordinance 2026A on Feb. 18, reclassifying a part-time position in the Veterans Service office into a full-time Department of Transportation Claims Associate (DTCA).
HR Director Jeff Hubbard briefed the council, saying the change follows January discussions with the Veterans Service Officer and is driven by new federal and state training and hour requirements that the county says make a full-time role necessary. Brady Riley read the ordinance text during the meeting. Brett Turner moved to approve the first reading; Michael Davidson seconded. For the second reading, Brian Thompson moved to approve and Davidson seconded; both readings passed with six yes votes.
The ordinance will alter the county’s 2026 salary ordinance to reflect the reclassification and associated staffing and pay adjustments. Council members did not raise objections during the readings and voted unanimously to enact the change. The council did not specify an effective date in the minutes of the meeting.
Council documents indicate the staffing change is intended to ensure compliance with training and hourly obligations imposed on claims-related duties. The council did not discuss any alternative staffing models during the meeting.
