Fire crews praised for life-saving rescue; commissioners reject idea of assigning firefighters routine mowing

Chief Larry Farley presented the Fire & Rescue monthly report to the Public Safety Committee and described a March structure fire in which crews pulled an elderly resident from a burning home and transported him to the hospital; the chief said he later learned the man had been discharged and praised crew performance.
"They saved his life," Chief Farley said when describing video of the response. The chief said crews wear helmet cameras to capture training and response footage and that the department had edited footage to protect privacy before sharing it with commissioners.
Later in the discussion, a purchasing-committee suggestion that firefighters take on routine county lawn mowing was raised. Farley and commissioners questioned the idea on operational and cost grounds: Farley said buying seven commercial mowers and providing storage and fuel would cost over $100,000 and would strain deployment readiness. Commissioners and staff agreed routine grounds maintenance should remain with maintenance or be handled through contracting; volunteers and some volunteer departments historically did local mowing but current county operational tempo makes that impractical.
The fire & rescue report was approved by the committee.
