Verona Area School District outlines AI plan and digital citizenship curriculum ahead of 2026-27 rollout

Jason, the district's technology lead, told the Verona Area School District board on April 20 that the district has integrated AI into classroom supports this year and is finalizing a broader AI plan for staff and students in 2026-27.
He said staff have created 585 "boost activities" that tie AI work to specific rubrics and Wisconsin state standards so students can use AI only within assigned parameters. "We have 585 boost activities created by our staff and shared with our students throughout this school year so far," Jason said.
The technology presentation also described a refreshed K–5 digital citizenship curriculum, higher password standards for grades 6–12 and community engagement sessions on keeping students safe online and AI basics. Jason said the district is considering a phased rollout that balances access with training: "It's not just about flipping a switch...making sure that we're doing it in a way that is not only who we open up to, but how we get the professional development out there to our students as well," he said.
Board members asked about equity and implementation. One member noted that AI might change students' interest in technology careers and asked how local tech employers could be engaged; another asked whether community training sessions would be recorded for later access. Jason said at least some recordings and materials are available and that professional development had already drawn staff interest (25 teachers in first session, 41 in second).
The board approved the 3.5 technology monitoring report as achieving reasonable progress. The administration recorded a follow-up action to finalize the AI plan and provide a rollout timeline by the end of the school year; that task was described as "planned."
