Milton board adopts strategic goal to retain and recruit high-quality staff

The Milton School District Board on April 14 approved a strategic-plan goal aimed at retaining and recruiting high-quality staff, endorsing language that allows the district to either develop new programs or expand existing ones.

Board members spent significant time debating whether the goal should use an "and" or "and/or" construction when describing actions — "developing and or expanding and implementing" a competitive compensation and benefits package — to preserve flexibility for administration. Tracy framed the goal around expanding existing efforts; administrator Chris said his team could pursue either approach. Joe urged the board not to overwork the wording, saying, "Everyone has great ideas here. We're getting lost in the words. This is a goal, not a date."

Following the discussion, a motion to adopt the wording with the "and/or" option was moved and seconded; the board voted to approve the motion. The board directed staff to incorporate the agreed language in the strategic-plan materials and bring the item forward for implementation steps at future meetings.

The approval does not itself appropriate funds; subsequent budget or implementation decisions will return to the board for review and action.

The board scheduled further action on related documents for its April 27 meeting.
