Santa Clara Unified board approves resolutions finalizing staff separations

Dr. Gonzales told the board that, following the board’s Feb. 26 decision to reduce or eliminate particular certificated services, the district issued preliminary notices and "while 43 employees initially requested administrative hearings, a mutual settlement agreement with each staff member has since been reached, resulting in the withdrawal of all hearing requests." By adopting Resolution 26-34 the board authorized final termination notices to be issued prior to the May 15 deadline.
On the related item, Dr. Gonzales said the board’s earlier action to reduce classified positions resulted in preliminary layoff notices being served by the March 15 deadline. He said all impacted staff waived their right to a formal hearing and the board’s approval of Resolution 26-35 gives the district authority to issue final notices effective at the end of the current school year, on June 30, 2026.
Trustees voted 6-0 to approve each resolution, with Trustee Canova recorded as absent. Trustee Rotterman moved to approve both items; the motions were seconded and each passed with votes from Trustees Fairchild, Muirhead, Rotterman, Ryan, Watanabe and the Chair.
Trustee Watanabe, speaking during the roll call and votes, said, "This is not an easy yes, but yes," indicating reluctant support for the action.
The board also approved the meeting agenda earlier in the session and reviewed Board Policy 1313 (civility/public comment guidelines). No members of the public registered to speak on the items. The meeting was adjourned at 04:39.
The resolutions reference education code provisions the district cited during the presentation. Final notices must be served by May 15, and the district indicated that settlements with affected employees removed pending hearing requests; the board did not provide additional public details about individual settlement terms.
