Summary
After staff presentations that cited structural damage and unpaid city liens, Hurst City Council voted to declare buildings at 1129 Desiree Lane and 1324 West Redbud Drive substandard, authorize demolition of improvements and place special-assessment liens to recover city costs.
HURST, Texas — The Hurst City Council on Jan. 13 voted to authorize demolition and place liens on two properties the city said are substandard and unfit for human habitation.
Tanya Wilson (Speaker 6) told the council the house at 1129 Desiree Lane has "serious structural issues, water damage" and that the city has had no contact with anyone at the property; she said the property has been vacant since 2022 and city service liens total $15,000. After the presentation the city attorney read a motion to readopt prior findings, declare the buildings substandard and unfit, authorize the removal of all improvements and to place a lien on the property to recover the city's costs. The council moved, seconded and the motion carried.
On the second property, 1324 West Redbud Drive, Wilson said a November 2023 fire left the building vacant and boarded; the property owner is deceased and liens have exceeded $16,000. The council again readopted prior findings and authorized demolition and a lien to secure recovery of costs; the motion carried.
Both items were handled in public hearings. Council did not provide roll-call vote tallies in the open minutes beyond the verbal "Aye" and the chair's statement that the motions carried. The legal descriptions given at the meeting: 1129 Desiree — Richland Oaks Subdivision Block P Lot 12; 1324 West Redbud Drive — Hirsch Hills Edition, Block 13, Lot 7.
Why it matters: The actions allow the city to remove buildings the city deems hazardous and to recover cleanup and abatement costs by special assessment against the properties. Residents in the affected neighborhoods may see demolition activity and subsequent special-assessment charges on property records.
Next steps: The city will proceed with demolition plans and place liens to secure cost recovery as authorized by the motions.
