A committee member who said they work for the Grand Junction Housing Authority described an existing 52-unit project with bike parking for 18 bikes and reported it was nearly full during a recent count. "They put a huge bike share... we went out last year and counted how many so they have 18 bike bike parking for 18 bikes in a 52 unit apartment building... the thing was full," the member said, using the example to argue that mandated bike-parking is not a burdensome cost for developers.
Members said the task force (described in the meeting as composed primarily of developers and engineers) had proposed reducing long-term bike parking in several uses, and that the planning commission had not reached a recommendation. Staff said the item was being returned to staff for further refinement before it returns to council; the committee agreed to keep the matter on its agenda and to consider preparing a letter if needed.
Several members suggested the Urban Trails Committee should offer technical expertise or participate as stakeholders in planning-code discussions going forward.
