Eric described crash history for the curve at that location and said the city project team is proposing a roundabout and associated pedestrian improvements. "There's been 17 crashes in the last 5 years here in this curve," he said, adding that one crash caused a serious injury and several others were minor. He noted the current pedestrian crossing routes are inadequate for children attending Orchard Ave Elementary and that the project would extend a culvert and adjust drainage but would keep the overall ditch open within the project limits.
Eric asked the committee for a letter of support; the application deadline was described as next Friday (the 20th). A motion to provide a letter of support passed after seconding, and the committee asked staff to bring back more detailed designs and to consult the committee for feedback as the design progresses. One member cautioned the committee to ensure the roundabout design protects active modes (bikers and pedestrians) and to limit out-of-path travel for cyclists.
Eric said funding would be for fiscal year 2028, with design work over the next year and construction anticipated in 2028 if the grant is awarded.
