Council approves Peace Park playground renovation; memorial elements to be preserved

The Janesville City Council approved a consent resolution Feb. 9 authorizing city administration to expend funds for renovation of the Peace Park playground (file resolution 2026‑2412).
City Manager Kevin Lehner said the playground’s poured‑in‑place rubberized surfacing and wooden elements have degraded over time and the plan is to replace the surface with a similar durable material and to refresh playground equipment. Councilmember Williams, who spoke as a volunteer during the original construction, said the project began as a large volunteer effort and expressed interest in preserving the park’s commemorative pickets. Lehner told the council staff will try to preserve existing memorial elements or recreate them with different materials if preservation is not feasible.
Councilmember Williams moved approval and Councilmember Miller seconded. The measure passed unanimously on consent.
