The Janesville Common Council on Monday adopted Resolution No. 2026-2421 honoring John M. McManus III for more than 29 years of service with the city’s fire department, including his retirement as deputy fire chief.
The clerk read the resolution noting McManus began as a firefighter-paramedic in August 1996 and served in roles including paramedic preceptor, driver EPM, lieutenant EPM, captain EPM and deputy fire chief. The resolution lists awards such as VFW Paramedic of the Year (2004), VFW Firefighter of the Year (2011) and the Mighty Oak award (2014), and it recounts McManus’s participation in technical rescue, hazmat, dive and swift-water teams as well as his service on committees including communications, station planning and ambulance replacement.
Council Member Williams moved to adopt the resolution; the motion was seconded by Vice President Squire and passed unanimously. Members offered brief remarks of appreciation. McManus accepted a certificate and, speaking to the council and administration, described firefighting as his vocation and thanked his colleagues, his family and the community: “It was a vocation that shaped who I was to my core … Janesville is a truly special place in the world,” he said.
The council’s formal recognition accompanies McManus’s retirement from the City of Janesville.
