Summary
District arts supervisor and students highlighted performing and practical arts successes — including honor-society inductions, festival hosting and independent-study projects — and the board announced a May 11 referendum overview for the community.
District arts and student-program leaders used the April 27 board meeting to highlight recent student achievements and program growth and to preview community outreach for a planned bond referendum.
Lisa Swanick, introduced in the meeting as supervisor of fine, performing and practical arts, told the board that arts programming supports college and career readiness and school climate. "The arts provide meaningful and multiple pathways to success," she said, and she listed district successes including 48 students inducted into art, music and thespian honor societies, multiple adjudicated festivals hosted by the district, expansion of the dance program from three to 23 students and culinary-program recognitions (151 students earned ServSafe handler certification this year, the presentation said).
Student independent-study presentations gave the board examples of student work: Eve Simnetti, a graduating senior, presented a fashion-design portfolio and credited a teacher mentor with supporting her college planning; Julia Zumfano presented a 3D‑printing and safety‑device design for electronic bikes that included CAD work, solar‑powered reflectors and prototype mounting ideas for e‑bike horns and lights.
Board members and staff also recognized a range of student honors and district events, including a National Honor Society induction and academic achievement ceremonies, voter‑registration activities with the League of Women Voters for eligible 17‑ and 18‑year‑olds, and spring concerts and art shows scheduled in late May. The chair reminded the public of an upcoming May 11 meeting at the high‑school auditorium for a full referendum overview, and the board noted that outreach postcards are being mailed to the community.
The meeting also included routine recognitions and a retirement acknowledgment for Ada Trinidad, a world‑language teacher with 17 years of service.
The board adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
