The Rosenberg City Council voted to authorize staff to apply for a Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority grant to buy license-plate-reader (LPR) cameras for the city.
Chief White told the council that the resolution "would give us the authority to apply for" the grant and clarified the application is not a guarantee of funding. He said the program requires a 20% local match up to $150,000 and noted the city currently operates about 28 LPR readers. Chief White added that cameras cost roughly $3,500 apiece.
Council discussion focused on funding sources and assurances that the program would not draw on the general fund. Councilor Hector moved approval of the consent agenda item and Felix seconded; the council approved the consent agenda by voice vote.
If the grant is awarded, Chief White said staff would return to the council for approval of purchases and any required budget adjustments.
