City planning staff provided the Weatherford City Council with a refresher on the city’s general plan and how it guides development decisions.
Scott McDonald told the council the general plan—adopted in 2018 after a multi‑year process with robust public engagement—is the "bedrock" for development decisions and the "North Star" that keeps master plans aligned. "This document is the bedrock for every development project presented to the city," McDonald said.
McDonald explained that master plans (thoroughfare, water/wastewater, parks and downtown) are the implementation tools that translate the general plan into projects and budgets. He noted chapters focused on infrastructure (water, wastewater, stormwater, electric, streets, solid waste and recycling) and public safety, and said the capital improvement program and annual general fund guide priorities.
Council members thanked staff for the refresher and noted the public was heavily included in the original plan. No action was required or taken on the item; staff will continue to use the general plan as the basis for project evaluations and reporting.
