Council approves Front Street drainage contract for up to $1.11 million to replace failing system

The City Council authorized a construction contract for Front Street drainage improvements to address a dilapidated drainage line in the northeast part of Weatherford.
City staff described the project as replacement of approximately 400 linear feet of 48‑inch corrugated metal pipe with about 400 feet of 10‑by‑5‑foot concrete box culvert to serve roughly 140 acres in the northeast quadrant near North Elm and Front Street. Staff said the design will accommodate a 100‑year storm event under current engineering standards and noted that property owners donated easements needed for construction.
Staff reported an engineer’s estimate of $1.3 million, seven bidders competed, and the recommended contract amount presented to council was "not to exceed $1,110,151" with JR West Texas Concrete LLC as the contractor. "We think this project will significantly reduce upstream flooding and address long‑standing drainage concerns in that area," the presenter said.
Council voted to approve the contract; staff said the project is scheduled for roughly 150 days and, if work begins in February, could finish by July. Council members also noted potential economic-development benefits from making the adjacent property more usable.
