Summary
After a facilities feasibility study the board approved resurfacing both Iken West tracks — estimated at about $150,000 per track — and declined to pursue turf installation that staff said would add roughly $4 million.
The New Berlin School District board voted to approve resurfacing projects for the outdoor tracks at Iken West after staff presented findings from a facilities feasibility study.
District staff told the board the initial estimate for full replacement had been roughly $1,000,000 per track, but follow-up study showed the district could resurface each track for about $150,000. Staff said adding turf inside the stadiums would require roughly $4,000,000 more and was not recommended at this time given current financial constraints. "We do not recommend moving forward with turfing those fields at that cost," a district administrator said.
A board member moved to approve the outdoor track resurfacing projects at Iken West; another member seconded the motion. The chair called for a show-of-hands vote and the motion carried.
Staff said resurfacing is expected to extend useful life approximately five to seven years, depending on weather and usage. The board directed staff to proceed with contracting to complete the resurfacing this summer.
