Summary
Elmwood Elementary Principal Jamie Veal and Associate Principal Ryan Sams presented student success stories, described the school’s new First Lego League robotics program and reported nearly $60,000 raised for school programs; staff highlighted intervention work that dismissed 21 students from formal intervention since November.
Elmwood Elementary presented student work, instructional goals and the school’s new First Lego League robotics team at the New Berlin School District board meeting.
"We continue to work hard to empower our students to set goals and challenge them to reach their full potential," Principal Jamie Veal told the board, describing how the school paired a chosen book with classroom goal-setting and schoolwide initiatives. Veal highlighted the Lego League program and said recent school fundraising efforts brought in nearly $60,000 to support student activities.
Associate Principal Ryan Sams described intervention and tiered instruction systems in place to support struggling readers and credited the BLAST program and focused reteaching for measurable gains. School staff reported that 21 students had been dismissed from formal intervention since November as a result of intensified instructional supports.
Students and staff also described the Lego League innovation project, which included research with outside experts and prototype development. "One thing I can also take away from this is to have courage and perseverance," student Joey said, recounting the robotics experience.
The presentation emphasized plans to grow STEM opportunities, sustain the robotics club, expand maker-space access and continue work on reading and math interventions. The board thanked Elmwood’s team and guests for the presentation.
